klipschutz comes from San Francisco, CA
How long have you been writing? Since I was 14.
What do you consider to be your greatest accomplishment as a writer? My Nobel Prize. No wait, I visualized that during an aromatherapy session. Maybe hearing Chuck Prophet play “You Could Make a Doubter out of Jesus,” a song we cowrote, on the David Letterman Show. That’s an external accomplishment. Creatively, it would be writing a poem someone wants to reread.
What projects of yours have been recently published? My most recent book came out in 2015. Chuck Prophet’s disc, Bobby Fuller Died for Your Sins, on which I cowrote 8 songs, came out in February 2017. In October 2017, the final issue of Four by Two, a collectible minimag I coedited with Jeremy Gaulke through 12 issues (quarterly), dropped. The run of the series has been purchased by UC Berkeley, to be housed in their Special Collections Library.
What are you currently working on and what inspired this work? Songsmithing with Chuck Prophet, monkeying around with old poems, and knocking a new one out in between. I don’t mess with interrogating inspiration; when it stops by, I throw a parade.
Where can we find your work? If you look, you can find it.
How do you react to rejections? Not well. Even less well than that.
How do you react when one of your submissions is accepted for publication? I buy myself a drink.
What is your best piece of advice on how to stay sane as a writer? Observe me carefully and do the opposite.
What is your favorite book? I’m an enthusiast; too many to list. Top of the pile today is The Master and Margarita. Okay, one more: The Big Sleep.
Who is your favorite author? As with the above, it changes. Maybe Roberto Bolano.
If you could have dinner with one fictional character, who would it be and why? J. Alfred Prufrock. So I could eat a peach in front of him.
What makes you laugh? My cats. My wife. My friends. I guess those are whos, not whats. My brother Jeff made me laugh this morning.
What makes you cry? The destruction of my country, and attempted ruination of the entire world, by the current administration.
What is your preferred drink while you write? I talk a big game but drink coffee.
What is your favorite food? Avocado. (Memo to Paul Singletary.)
Shakespeare or Bukowski? Twin pillars, impossible to choose.
