Ryan Quinn Flanagan is 39 and comes from Elliot Lake, Ontario, Canada
How long have you been writing? I first published a poem and had to recite it when I was ten, so I guess since that age. But it was really bad. I wouldn’t say I wrote anything serious until my mid-twenties. I didn’t even really know what writing was.
What do you consider to be your greatest accomplishment as a writer? That’s a hard one. Probably that first time you get published in the mags. You’re young and there is no feeling like it. Like that first high. I don’t get that feeling anymore and that makes me sad.
What projects of yours have been recently published? I have recently published a book with Pski’s Porch titled: Gangbangs and Other Mass Rallies. There is also a collection of poems out with Alien Buddha Press titled: Vegas Poems. As well as some books with Horror Sleaze Trash and Marathon Books.
What are you currently working on and what inspired this work? I am currently working on a few different poetry projects with a couple different presses. The work is simply inspired by a compulsion to write, and enjoyment in the process of creating something.
Where can we find your work? I post a lot of published poems up on social media. There is also various joints on the net as well as my personal website: http://ryanquinnflanagan.yolasite.com/ And there are the usual haunts such as Amazon, Barnes & Noble etc., as well as from the individual publishers of course.
How do you react to rejections? Pretty well. Most the time I never hear back either way, so even if it is a rejection it is good to hear back at least.
How do you react when one of your submissions is accepted for publication? Happy in general. Happy that the time and effort you put into submissions was not all for naught. It’s also a cool way to connect with other writing/publishing people as well.
What is your best piece of advice on how to stay sane as a writer? Never forget the importance of humour in your work and in your life. Do not take yourself or anyone else too seriously. We are only here for a short time and humour helps make it bearable.
What is your favorite book? I don’t know if there is just one, but if I had to pick one: The Days Run Away Like Wild Horses Over the Hills by Charles Bukowski. I really love Kafka’s short stories as well.
Who is your favorite author? Charles Bukowski. So many cool writers though.
If you could have dinner with one fictional character, who would it be and why? Randall Patrick McMurphy from Cuckoo’s Nest. That would be one hell of a dinner!
What makes you laugh? Cats.
What makes you cry? The cruel way humanity treats one another and everything else.
What is your preferred drink while you write? Definitely red wine. Chilean. Frontera to be exact.
What is your favorite food? Nachos.
Shakespeare or Bukowski? Buk all the way.
