Maria Sebastian comes from Clarence Center (Buffalo), NY
How long have you been writing? I’ve been writing songs all my life and poetry since 2011, mostly.
What do you consider to be your greatest accomplishment as a writer? I keep improving.
What projects of yours have been recently published? I have a fairly new self-published chapbook, (2017) and a recent CD (2018). The CD won three Global Music Awards, which at least sounds lofty. I also had a poem about my fascination with Malcolm X published in an Afro-Futurism anthology.
What are you currently working on and what inspired this work? I’m working on a new chapbook. No inspiration out of the ordinary. Just to keep the gators fed, as Stephen King might say.
Where can we find your work?Mostly my web site.
How do you react to rejections? I try to learn more what that publication likes so I can see if I have anything that fits.
How do you react when one of your submissions is accepted for publication? “Uh boy. I’ve changed that poem fourteen times since I sent that in.”
What is your best piece of advice on how to stay sane as a writer? Keep few choice friends. They’re expensive in every way imaginable–mostly regarding time–and you can never give them enough. Every time I get invited to a graduation party or baby shower I swear for days, buy presents quickly, try to care, then leave early so I can get back to my creative work. I always make sure I write after so I got something out of it, besides friend points. That said, I do adore babies.
What is your favorite book? Tie: Sister Carrie, Native Son, Huck…, The Autobio of Malcolm X, In Cold Blood. I’m currently reading “Killers of the Flower Moon.” Excellent.
Who is your favorite author? Can’t choose. Capote, Mark Twain, Jim Thompson, Ted Dreiser.
If you could have dinner with one fictional character, who would it be and why? George W. Hurstwood of Sister Carrie. He’s a sympathetic and memorable character who’s usually forgotten on favorites lists.
What makes you laugh? John Malkovich in Burn After Reading.
What makes you cry? When other people cry.
What is your preferred drink while you write? Seltzer water, coffee, whiskey, brandy, or rum.
What is your favorite food? I’m a vegetarian. No meat or seafood. If I could live on French Fries…though I try to avoid them. Love tofu, rice pudding, veggie burgers. Nothing with eyeballs.
Shakespeare or Bukowski? Bukowski. I’ve read more of him than Shakespeare, to be fair. You’re publishing a poem here I changed too late for this publication. I took out the jabs. I actually love his snaggletooth poem.
