How long have you been writing? 25 years.

What do you consider to be your greatest accomplishment as a writer? Probably winning the Bridport Prize.

What projects of yours have been recently published? A new children’s book, Blast Off!

What are you currently working on and what inspired this work? I am working on a picture book.

How do you react to rejections? I try not to let them get to me.

How do you react when one of your submissions is accepted for publication? I celebrate in style!

What is your best piece of advice on how to stay sane as a writer? Give yourself and your work plenty of time and space.

What is your favorite book? The Portrait of a Lady.

Who is your favorite author? Henry James.

If you could have dinner with one fictional character, who would it be and why? Isabel Archer. She sounds fun.

What makes you laugh? The things kids say.

What makes you cry? When I lose another friend to cancer.

What is your preferred drink while you write? Yorkshire tea.

What is your favorite food? Biscuits.

Shakespeare or Bukowski? I love them both.
