To a Dead Cat

Your body lay crushed and broken in the street
one eyeball bulging out, floating atop a crimson crest.

In life you had been
sleek and black
a fleeting shadow
glimpsed from the window.

I called animal control
to come pick up your broken body

Eating Bitter Herbs

I used to slather horseradish on top of my matzo
as thick as possible
At our annual Passover dinner
the last remnant of a Judaism my parents had left far behind
and I have abandoned altogether
